“We would definitely be looking at a C. diffeolase test as well, particularly if there was some other symptom that we were seeing,” says Dr. Loomis. “For someone [taking antibiotics], we may have that as a consideration.”
It’s not entirely clear why more kids and teenagers who are at increased risk of C. difficile are at lower risk of getting the infection. One theory, and it’s not as simple as it might sound, is that people who need antibiotics as a preventative measure aren’t also immune as well as those who are not, Loomis says.
But he adds that it’s rare for a child to be treated for C. difficile infection if he or she develops C. difficile, because of the time the infection takes.
For most kids, the antibiotic antibiotics the CDC recommends is given within two days of infection. There aren’t enough patients who don’t have symptoms to support the recommendations, according to Dr. Thomas J. Spero, deputy commissioner of the CDC.
The problem arises in older kids who aren’t able to get that protection, since there are too few kids at risk for C. difficile to make that point, said Dr. Spero. “I would think that’s a good first step,” he said. “We’ll be able to really see if there’s an actual pattern or patterns of susceptibility.”
